nj3h I think it may be a matter of trial and error much the same as with Sudocue where valid grids have then to be solved with a limited subset of logical techniques. The number of grids increases the complexity of coming up with the requisite level. Note the problems that Borge is having at the mom...

The simplest way forward is the XY-wing that Sudocue gives. As a chain that reads (5=3)r8c3-(3=7)r7c2-(7=5)r7c4 => r8c4<>5. Singles from here. I think you are looking for an ALS type elimination. Setting Sudocue to ignore simple chains and Medusa, it finds this one. (3567=8)ALS:r8c3489-(8=56)ALS:r9c...

Hi Zoltag First Ruud hasn't been seen for some time, so I'm not sure if he will reply soon. My guess is that this is because the UR does not always lead to a definite digit placement (see for example the Unique Pair in the Solving Guide). I would think the program breaks the step into two: candidate...

Børge By the way the Wiki entry is a little out of date, these are not considered to be at the forefront at the moment at least for Solver programs. The best place to get the latest info is Hardest Sudokus Finding a nest of them in a Clueless would be a nasty surprise. Perhaps the Vulcans would rath...

Børge After I mentioned it I realized that the intractability of the Easter Monster would only be apparent if the Clueless grid actually stalled for all logical techniques. (Not including Steve Kurzhal's breakthrough or Champagnes 'Full Tagging Method'). The Clueless variants given here are 'solvabl...

The Daily Lite is designed to be played on the webpage, the other puzzles (being more difficult) are designed either to be printed out or pasted into a program. If you don't have a copy already, and you have a suitable Windows system it would be worth downloading a copy of Ruuds' Sudocue program. No...

Richard. As we are discussing Clueless here, the Generalized Fish mentioned in my PM actually contain centre dots as one of the constraint sets. I'll check out the latest solver to see if some of my comments are now out of date. From experience in solving these I always visit the Clueless grid first...

I see that JC is turning these out on an assembly line now. With regard to step 2, there is a possibility that Sudoku Architect written by Havard may be able to deal with this step, it is not officially released yet. the current version is called Sudoku Assistenten. Not much about it on the Programm...

A minor correction. The uniqueness of the 9 outer sudokus must be reliant on a subset of the solution values in the Clueless grid, perhaps 2 -3 should be required as givens. Also using those values alone in the the Clueless grid, it should not be immediately solvable or the puzzle will be trivial. S...
