.TXT file - characters as they come off the keyboard
.RTF file - text files with font and size and style tags

.doc .wp .html (and others) word, word perfect, ventura publisher or other word processer files.
these have tags for hyperlinks, chapter numbers, footnotes, indexes, can have embeded pictures with text wrapping around. Generally there is also a history of all the changes you made in the file somewhere for an undo function. most of these when you get a corrupt file will have the body in plain text somewhere in the file ...easy to reconstruct after a crash.

.PDF adobe publisher - the above with public key encription
these are readable and backward compatable ONLY with the current version of the adobe reader. (hackers have programs to undo ie. pdf to word)
This is designed to be modified only by the origional author and registered adobe user.
any corruption and hopefully you have a backup in plain text or a wordprocessor format.
to edit these is kind of like unbaking bread when you need a cup of flour.

Can I send the Excel file to someone to make it into a puzzle? I'm not getting the hang of that part.

I've got a full solution, and it's nicely formatted.

Who wants to try? Pete?
