Henry Sudoku

Post by aman »

:) I have contributed some of my sudoku creations to the following websites:

(i) http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.ph ... part=index

(Other sudoku creations of mine are found in the previous monthly issues of NRICH.)

(ii) http://www.ageofpuzzles.com/Collections ... Sudoku.htm

(This variant is based in part on the rule of my two board games "Henry's Houses" and "Pseudo-Go", as stated on the Kadon Enterprise website.)

(iii) http://www.chinasudoku.com/

(Here you can find the first ever sudoku variant that requires an additional clue from a story (a fairy tale entitled "Fictusia") for obtaining the solution to the puzzle.)

(iv) http://www.janko.at/Raetsel/SudokuVarianten/index.htm

(Here you can find some of my selected sudoku creations with German explanation of the rules.)

Thanks, Henry, but I don't think anyone but you and me visit these forums anymore, and I check them only once every few weeks. Now that Ruud is gone, no one can register for the forums, so no new users, either.

I'm thankful that the main Sudocue site and puzzle repository are still going, although many of the puzzle types have "run dry". A few types still have new puzzles, though.

Thanks for your comment. If what you said is true, this forum really looks like a desolate planet in the outer space with only both of us loitering around in search for other signs of life.

May you explain what you mean by "Ruud is gone"? Surely Ruud won't desert so easily what he had taken so much time and effort to build up from scratch?

That pretty much sums it up.

Unfortunately, that seems to be exactly the case. He abruptly vanished from every sudoku forum and Web site on the net on or about the 18th of January, without any warning or explanation. Emails to him have gone unanswered. Fearing the worst, another forum member in the Netherlands called his home and spoke to his wife. All is well, she says, but Ruud has moved on to other interests.

Meanwhile, one by one, the puzzle sets are drying up on the Sudocue site, and only the One-Trick Ponies, the Daily Lites, the X-Files, and the Jigsaws still have new puzzles being posted. The forums are set so that new members must be approved manually by Ruud (which means no new forum members since January), and no one can register Clueless Helper anymore, so it is now useless to new users.

Most of the regulars of this forum have moved over to the forum that Richard Broughton (author of Sudoku Solver) set up in its place here: http://www.rcbroughton.co.uk/sudoku/forum/index.php

It's a sad news to hear of the sudden and puzzling disappearing of Ruud. Hope that he would surface again one day to breathe new life into this forum.

Do you have any idea about another forum http://www.sudoku.org.uk/SudokuForums.asp?fid=1 ?

It seems that forum is also suffering the same fate as Ruud's forum. The announcement "Registration for anyone without an account will be available shortly" was put up in that forum for quite sometime, but nothing has been done to register new users.

Finally, thanks for informing me about the new forum.

We all hoped he'd be back, or at least have an explanation for us, but it's been eight months now, traffic here is nil (except for you and me and this thread), and the more time that passes, the less likely, I think, that Ruud will return. My only remaining hope is that he will keep the puzzle site functioning for as long as there are puzzles in the repository. (See this thread here: http://www.rcbroughton.co.uk/sudoku/for ... f=12&t=189 )

That Web site has been having software issues for a while now, especially related to their online sudoku contests. I think the forums are the least of their worries right now.

Mike Mepham is gone (passed away last December, IIRC), and Andrew Stuart apparently has his hands full just providing puzzles to their syndication customers. They have a new moderator or two, but their duties include Web site maintenance, and they have been concentrating their efforts toward fixing the contest software.

The traffic in the forums seems to be devoted mainly to either the contests (and associated current problems) or to esoteric mathematical/logical discussions, many of which are being ruined by a pompous, know-it-all jerk by the name of Bill Richter. I personally have no interest in either the contests or the academic discussions, as I use sudoku for relaxation, and neither of those is relaxing to me.
Finally, thanks for informing me about the new forum.
Not a problem! I know many there would welcome your contributions!

Actually I think that Andrew Stuart left some time ago. They have a new person (Alex) looking after the site, but it seems most people on the forum are obsessed with their ranking on the contest. It isn't possible to contribute to the forum without registering for the contest - I have no interest in submitting solutions to their contest so haven't registered.

I still drop by Ruud's site here occasionally just to check if anything has changed - I guess I'm not the only one.

Wow! There are four of us here! That has to be a record (at least for recent months)! :o

Most of my sudoku forum time is over at Richard Broughton's Sudoku Solver forums. Gemma, I know you're registered over there. Perhaps you can drag Marlie back to the forums with you!

Børge has been posting Clueless Specials and Clueless Explosions for us every week, and he and tarek take turns posting weekly Samurai puzzles. tarek has also posted several very nice Kazaguruma (windmill) puzzles.

I miss you both  , and would love to see you over there. I wish I could help with the English - Dutch translation, but. . . :(

Elaine and Henry, we'd love to have you over there, as well! :D
