nothin wrong with basic.
with this dam windows xp, I end up usin it a lot.

delphi doesnt have port() anymore
so i make a little assembly routine to do inp and out and windows says illegal instruction

But gwbasic qbasic or qb45 works just fine... it can also read page 040
without the illegal address access message

as for jaap's generator ... it does have a numeric rating
i do notice the intersecting corners arent always blank like Ruud favors

the difficulty of any of Ruuds puzzles kind of get me wondering..
my program with pairs hidden singles+intersections shouldnt solve the hard or very hard... but it sometimes does perhaps the intersecting nonets contribute more than they should

a couple of the samurais it solved the center but the petals stump it with a triple or a xwing so i guess im still looking for numerical ratings.

I'm glad to hear he was Ruud was joking. I wasn't able to log in and post last week, and I was going to suggest that we all "click on the bag" to cover his speeding tickets!

Actually, I think I'll send another donation anyway. I save money since I don't buy crummy puzzle magazines anymore, since these puzzles are so much better!

Remind me how to find out how much a Euro is in US $ though (again) please!

heres how it works from the horses mouth:

Hi Peter,

I just had a quick look at the forum thread and you had some questions
about the difficulty rating and the string format.

The difficulty rating is fairly easy to explain. The solver has 4
levels of rules.

0: singles (naked and hidden)
1: locked candidates (row/box, box/row, column/box or box/column).
10: naked pairs, hidden pairs, x-wings.
100: anything else (incl. trial and error, backtracking)

Each time one of these rules is needed to solve the next step, the
associated number is added to the difficulty.

As for the string format it displays, it is always top to bottom, left
to right, with . for an empty spot. However, you can paste nearly any
text format into that box and it will read it when you press the parse
button.

I wrote the applet a little over about 2 years ago. If you go over to
the Sudoku Programmers forum and search on posts by jaap you will find
some explanation of how the program works.
