22 Dec 2006 Nightmare: Another Uniqueness Solution

21 Dec 2006 Nightmare Not So Tough
This one's fairly easy if you notice early on an AIC for digit "6". .---------------------.---------------------.---------------------. | 1367 2 13567 | 147 9 8 | 147 145-6 1456 | | 17 57 4 | 3 6 12 | 179 1259 8 | | 9 #67 8 | 5 247 124 | 147 3 *1246 | :---------------------+-------...

(Initial post edited for minor correction.) Perhaps we are going to have to figure out a way to post simultaneously so that people won't think we are the same person :) I don't really think there's much danger of that yet. But I will admit to having learned from your responses to my posts, especiall...

11 Dec 2006 Nightmare: X-Cycle
In the 11 Dec Nightmare, this is the position after eliminations from basic techniques, a naked "279" triple in r123c1, and a naked "178" triple in r789c9: .----------------.-------------------.-----------------. | 29 1 8 | 7 *35 6 | 259 #359 4 | | 79 3 4 | 158 58 2 | 1579 5789 6...

Sorry for the delay in responding. I got far behind due to some computer problems and the US Thanksgiving holiday period. I have come across several interesting uniqueness arguments lately and am just getting around to posting them. I don't really think I want to start running around in other boards...

5 Dec 2006 Nightmare: No Medusa Bridges Needed
I was able to solve the 5 Dec Nightmare without using Medusa bridges or 3-D chains. This is the position after eliminations from basic techniques, a naked "238" triple in r12c9|r3c7, and an empty rectangle for digit "9" in box 6, eliminating (9)r9c8. .------------------.---------...

4 Dec 2006 Nightmare: 12-Cell Deadly Pattern
In the 4 Dec 2006 Nightmare, I came across a threatened 12-cell deadly pattern which could be used in the last major step in my solution. At the outset, I should acknowledge that there is a fairly short XY chain which gives the same elimination, so this is presented "just for grins and giggles&...

Ruud, I agree with ZeroSignal. It required almost no pause for thought (only singles and one line/box locked candidates elimination) until near the end, as he indicates, then only one non-basic step and more singles. Was this by chance intended to be the One Trick Pony for 10 Dec? I'm not even sure ...

27 Nov 2006 Nightmare, Quick Uniqueness Solution
This is the position in the 27 Nov 2006 Nightmare, after initial eliminations from basic techniques and a "369" naked triple in r4c467. .---------------------.---------------------.---------------------. | 4 2589 256 | 2689 689 689 | 7 1 3 | | 7 *89 136 | 5 134689 14689 | 2 46 *89+6 | | 23...

In Agreement
istvan, I have to say I agree with you, but I must admit I'm still mostly a 2-D thinker, as I haven't really begun trying to use Medusa coloring as such. I could not reproduce the clusters that you posted, even after playing around with my solver settings. When I finally did come up with a Medusa co...

26 Nov 2006, 2 x 4 Deadly Pattern
I found a 2-row by 4-column deadly pattern in the 26 Nov 2006 Nightmare. My solution path was fairly close to the Sudocue solver to this point: .---------------.---------------.---------------. | 3458 39 2 | 1458 1479 5789| 6 349 3479| | 1 45 49 | 2456 3 567 | 479 24 8 | | 348 7 6 | 248 249 89 | 5 1...

"Unique ALS XZ Reduction," 24 Nov 2006
One of the uniqueness-based solution methods discussed in the Solving Guide is the "Unique Subset" technique. This technique is based on a pattern in which only one side of a potential non-unique polygon contains surplus candidates, and these candidates combine with other cells to form a l...

UR "Unique Quad" and Other Comments
Para, The Sudocue program allows you to enable or disable the various solving techniques it can use in its solution. When a new puzzle is loaded into Sudocue, it will report to you if it is unable to solve the puzzle using only the currently enabled techniques. Thus, if you disable the Medusa techni...
