How badly do do want this feature?

Very bad, can't wait. Can it come in the next release?

Select difficulty for a random new Sudoku

Post by Ruud »

A request has been made to allow selecting the difficulty for a new generated random puzzle.

This feature requires Sudo Cue to rate each puzzle after generation and reject it when the rate is not requested. This will slow down the generation of a random puzzle.

The surprise effect is also gone...

new feature request

Post by lac »

I still don't have a windows machine, so this does not affect me
personally but ...

This feature requires Sudo Cue to rate each puzzle after
generation and reject it when the rate is not requested.
This will slow down the generation of a random puzzle.

Huh? This feature requires SudoCue to test for the existance of one
flag, after the generation of a random puzzle the 'did the user request
a puzzle of a specific difficulty' flag. Only if it is set should the 'rate
the puzzle' step be performed. No slowdown unless you asked for it.

I think this feature has been implemented . . . and is the reason that I have yet to play a randomly generated SudoCue puzzle. No matter what level I select, it simply runs out of attempts, giving up after 200 attempts on Tough, Hard etc . . . no suitable puzzle found.
(So I have only played SudoCue by loading a puzzle from text)

There doesn't seem to be a "Any Level" option either.

I have no trouble with sudocue
the easys come right now
moderates take 10 trys or so
hard take 40
i got an unfair in 7... this may be lucky
i have moved the solving techniques around to apply the ones i know first but theres nothing in that to affect the ratings

i know the harder ones take longer to generate ... but i dont see how this will change anything either unless its going for something below easy...like found in most newspapers.
or perhaps an exact numeric score

if theres a 6th choice where you set the range numerically perhaps that will handle everything ...

moderate tuff hard and unfair i cant usually tell a difference
take a guess and it either solves or conflicts a few moves futhere on...

so perhaps im not qualified to vote

Update: Symmetry was my issue - or was it ?

Post by Methuselah »

After your post I tried determinedly a couple more times without any joy.
Then I started played around with the options.
Only after I set the Symmetry to 180 did I get a puzzle.

Oddly enough, after getting that first puzzle . . .
. . . I can now generate random ones as well.
